The Guild's History
A Brief History
Our humble beginnings
Back in October 1982, Verna Schuler, an Adult Eduction teacher, reached out to women who shared her passion for quilting, inviting them to come together and form a new “Quilting and Boutiques Group.” Their very first gathering took place on October 20, 1982, in the Council Chambers at Norwalk City Hall. Verna was expecting 40 people to show up to the first meeting. When 87 people showed up Verna realized that this was a guild not a club and — the start of something truly special.
Just a few months later, The Southeast News (the local newspaper) featured the group in a January 1983 article, noting, “The renewed interest in the art of quilting is a real one… The purpose of the guild is to provide quilters with an opportunity to meet monthly, exchange ideas, strengthen their quilting knowledge, and stay current with the ever-evolving art of quilting.”
From that first meeting, a vibrant community of creativity, friendship, and shared inspiration began to take shape — one stitch at a time.
